Reasons Your Garage Door Remote Won’t Work

Nothing can be more frustrating than returning home after a hard day’s work, only to press the button on your garage door’s remote and find that the Garage Door Does Not Open. Most people use their garage doors more often than the front door, and so if the remote isn’t responding, it will understandably frustrating you. Unfortunately, any number of things can be wrong including Broken Springs.

Fortunately, it is easier than most people think to troubleshoot and fix a garage door that does not work in most cases. While not as easy as a Manual Garage Door, but there are perks to having an automated model. In this article, we’ll take a look at what steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Causes for a Garage Door Remote Control Not Working

At times the causes that lead to the garage door remote not working are easy to address. However, some issues are more severe and will indicate getting the garage door professionally repaired. If your garage door isn’t opening with a remote, be sure to go through the steps below.

Check the Batteries of the Remote

When was the last time you replaced the batteries on the remote? If your garage door’s remote has stopped working, i.e. not signaling the door to raise or lower, then check the batteries. On average, the batteries last two years. But we often tell clients to change the batteries every year proactively.

To know if the batteries are dead, try opening the door using the wall-mounted control panel. If the panel responds, there is a high likely hood you have a faulty remote with dead batteries.

The Signal is Being Disrupted

After you’ve replaced the batterie, if the garage door still fails to respond, then you could have something interfering with the signal from the remote to the receiver. The two common causes are if the remote is out of range or the opener’s receiving antennae has been damaged.

Get within 20 feet of the garage door and now attempt to open it with the remote. Sometimes operating the remote from further away does not work. If your remote is working correctly, you will want to check the antennae for debris buildup or if it is broken. If the antennae look damaged, it’s time to call us to fix the issue.

The Lock Button Engaged

You will also want to check and make sure that the lock button on the garage door’s wall has not been engaged. Many people accidentally press the button while performing daily activities, but pressing it again should disengage it. Test the remote again after unlocking it.

The Remote Has To Be Reprogrammed

The last thing you can try doing is reprogramming your garage door’s remote before calling a technician. Sometimes regular use of the remote can disrupt the signal between both parties and require reassociation.

To Reprogram The Remote, put the garage door opener into learning mode, then hold the button on your remote for 3 seconds until you see the light flash or the LED on the opener blinking. Now try using the remote to close and open the door.

Conclusion

You could be facing other problems with your garage door opener and the remote, which can be fixed on your own. If there is a problem with the GFI fuse or the wiring, it is best to contract garage door opener experts like us to find and fix the problem.
